RV’S FOR VETERANS
“RV’S FOR VETERANS” PROJECT IS WORKING!
by Becky Jorgenson

Thanks to five very generous people here on the Central Coast, nine more of our homeless neighbors are now off the streets of SLO!  Because of the generosity and compassion of these donors, four veterans now have a safe and healthy place to live, out of their tents by the creek.

The first two RV’s went to previously homeless Navy veterans - one man and one woman. The woman veteran is now able to provide housing for her daughter and friend. The third motorhome was given to a young couple who are expecting a baby. This particular RV was purchased by an 85 year-old woman and given to the couple in honor of her deceased husband, a purple heart recipient of World War II, who served for many years in the Air Force and the Navy.

The fourth RV was given to a local veteran who served in the Marines and the Army. He and his 62 year-old caregiver and a friend will share this nice large RV.  Both the veteran and his friend have been suffering from cancer - in a tent.

The project is simple and can be done anywhere with no money, paperwork or staff. We look for donated RV’s, put the donor in touch with the veteran in need, they go to the DMV and transfer title  to the veteran, he registers the vehicle, obtains insurance, and away he goes with his home on wheels.

They are 42 mobile home parks in SLO County that allow RV’s. Monthly rent ranges from $400 on up, a fraction of the cost of house rent. There are numerous campgrounds all over the county where RV owners can park for a small fee…(disabled pay half price). We are also hopeful that our city/county government will come up with our own campground for homeless people very soon.

We are still in need of donated motorhomes or travel trailers. Many veterans receive benefits, but often it's not enough to pay rent and have much left over. Some veterans need to live alone due to medical issues - and this should be their choice.

We have four more homeless veterans anxiously awaiting news on an RV.

If you know of anyone who wants to donate an RV or travel trailer, please advise...my son and I started this project as a joint venture and earn nothing from it ... just giving back to our veterans who put their lives on the line for us. No money or paperwork exchanges hands in this project. And no liability is incurred.

“Hope’s Village of SLO” has now taken this project on under the auspices of their soon-to-be nonprofit. We appreciate your assistance as we work together to get more un-housed veterans into their own little “homes on wheels.”

(We do not provide tax exempt receipts due to restrictions by the IRS.) Please call with any questions.
