SHORTS

Following are short vignettes that disturb, en-lighten, inspire, congratulate, and help activists network with other organizations throughout the tri-county area. If you have some news, websites or summaries that you would like to be included here, please jot us an email at hopedance@aol.com.

Sampling Sustainable Systems
Your are invited to attend workshops and displays exploring alternative forms of energy Saturday, October 1. It is going to be a fascinating show-case of sustainable energy sources and their practical application to homeowners and prospective home builders.

The Mothers for Peace is putting this day together - with “a little help from their friends” - as a fund raiser.

The day’s events will take place at two venues: The San Luis Botanical Garden and the San Luis Sustainability Group of Architects’ Complex . You can begin the day at either venue from 10:00 o’clock on.

At the Botanical Garden there will be three different presentations, all beginning on the hour at 10:00, 11:00, 12:00, 1:00, and 2:00.

1. Steve Best, Earthbound Energy Resources, will present the fascinating science of geoexchange, a green technology for heating and cooling. The earth’s constant temperature is used as a renewable resource for forced air heating and cooling, radiant, domestic hot water , and pool and spa heating. (At the Garden’s amphitheater.)

2. John Ewan of Pacific Energy Company comes to us with 25 years of experience of solar energy systems. John started his business as a response to Diablo nuclear power plant wanting to offer alternative energy sources. He will give you insight into the many options for off-grid and grid inter-tie (such as the Palm Theater). With California legislature passing SB 1, solar power is becoming a viable option — with tax credit offered once more after a 25-year hiatus!(At the Garden’s amphitheater.)

Both of these presenters will have trailers in the Mariposa parking lot displaying some of their equipment. The parking lot has been reserved for the event.

3. Representatives from the Sustainability Group will provide educational tours of the partially built Education Center - a completely sustainable building. This building is being built in partnership with Cuesta College construction department. A new generation of builders are learning first hand about the concept of sustainability.

At the Sustainability Group of Architects’ Complex on Tassajara Creek Rd. near Santa Marguerita (also the home of Ken Haggard and Polly Cooper) there will on-going presentations and tours dealing with passive solar such as natural heating, cooling, venting, and lighting, straw bale construction, solar electric systems, micro hydro electric systems, and solar water heating.

Tickets are available at BooBoo Records on Monterey St, SLO
Pacific Energy Co. on Santa Barbara St, SLO

The two locations of the day’s events.
$15 for adults $25 for two tickets $10 for students Children accompanied by adults are free.

All donations are tax deductible, Please make all checks payable to Mothers for Peace.

If you would like your business card to be included as an advertisement in the written material, please send it to PO Box 164, Pismo Beach, CA 93448 with a $50.00 check. You can contact Bobbe Scott at 541-6099 or Evy Justesen at 546-8907 for more information.

An art sale around the Botanical Garden Kiosk is planned. Local artists are generously donating a piece of art for the fund raiser.

All proceeds go to the San Luis Obispo Mothers for Peace Scholarship Fund and for the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals hearing regarding issues of terrorism and security scheduled for October 17th in San Francisco.

The Breaking Point
by PETER MAASS (NYTimes)

<<Back in the 70’s, President Carter called for the moral equivalent of war to reduce our dependence on foreign oil; he was not re-elected. Since then, few politicians have spoken of an energy crisis or suggested that major policy changes are necessary to avert one. The energy bill signed earlier this month by President Bush did not even raise fuel-efficiency standards for passenger cars. When a crisis comes — whether in a year or 2 or 10 — it will be all the more painful because we will have done little or nothing to prepare for it.>> go to http://tinyurl.com/dpp74 for the entire story or if they want money for it, contact our offices here at hopedance.

Rebuffing Bush, 132 Mayors Embrace Kyoto Rules
By ELI SANDERS
http://civicprogress.org/a/content/view/100/2/
“The coalition is not the first effort by local leaders to take up the initiative on climate change. California, under Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger, a Republican, is moving to limit carbon dioxide emissions, and Gov. George A. Pataki of New York, also a Republican, has led efforts to reduce power plant emissions in the Northeast. But the coalition is unusual in its open embrace of an international agreement that the Bush administration has spurned, Mayor Nickels’s office said, and is significant because cities are huge contributors to the nation’s emission of heat-trapping gases.”

<<An amazing story about how Willits’ citizens have chosen to face the Peak Oil/Long Emergency head-on. It provides a model that can be followed anywhere that the disappearance of available oil supplies is being recognized. And how one community can come together to create its own local solutions. It is fascinating. And very well-written.>>

Safety Battle over the health of Wi-Fi
A fight is brewing in San Francisco over the safety of WI-FI (city-wide wireless). The social justice folks are all for it, believing it will bridge the “digital divide” and help everyone get on the internet. The Collaborative for Health and the Environment (CHE at http://www.cheforhealth.org) is concerned about the science showing that wireless electro-magnetic frequencies can cause cancer and other ills.

<<Dell Franklin and Stacey Warde have pooled their talents to publish an outlet for rogues like themselves. They’re calling it “The Rogue Voice.”

As Dell explains it, “a rogue is anyone who goes his own way and makes exceptions to the rules.”
They’re looking for political commentary, satire, slice of life (“Rogue of the Month,” in October they will feature a local fisherman and coffee roaster who drives a rust bucket and loves guns), anything that rattles the nerves of the “well adjusted.”

Home @ Stone Soup
Home is such a powerful metaphor. It is more than a place to live and be and keep our stuff. It is, in essence, the place where we co-exist with our surroundings; especially for those who recognize our integral relationship with Gaia. Home is far more than a building, and a yard; it is how we know the texture of the earth, the smell of dry grasses, the sounds of the waves, the calls of the birds in the evening, the sunset hues on the mountains…

Home is the land that holds our community, our stories, our myths, our history. Home is where the heart is and the heart is in the land. Land has moral efficacy, the power to ensure mindful and respectful behavior in the community. Our respectful relationship to the land, to Gaia as mother is of primary importance.

Stone Soup ECOmmunity remembers this kinship. The mission of this local initiative is to integrate community, permaculture and education within a living model. We are now in our birthing process; the time when we reach out for all that sustains us. We are compelled to create a home for our re-indigination as a culture. We believe that as a society, we must SLOW DOWN and come back into healthy relationship with self, family, community and the world around us.

With enough support, our initial endeavor will include a small home based Pre K/Kindergarten, with a possible separate mixed grades class. The Stone Soup ECOmmunity Initiative P.O.Box 1027 Carpinteria, CA 93014 (805) 745-5949 Stonesoup-ecommunity@cox.net

Experimental Hybrid Cars Get Up to 250 Mpg

Cal Poly Represents California at Solar Decathlon
SAN LUIS OBISPO - Cal Poly will represent California at the 2005 Solar Decathlon this October in Washington, DC.

Sponsored by the U.S. Department of Energy, the Solar Decathlon brings together 18 competing college and university teams from around the globe to design, build and operate the most livable and energy-efficient solar powered homes. The teams will assemble their houses on the National Mall to form a “solar village”open to the public Oct. 7-16.

Each team competes in 10 contegories ranging from architecture and livability to energy performance for space heating and cooling, hot water, lights, and appliances. Each house must also power an electric car. All this must be accomplished using only energy from the sun.

Teams are required to communicate their experiences to a wide audience. Through Web sites and public tours, they will share their stories about the Solar Decathlon and the knowledge they’ve gained. The Cal Poly team, in conjunction with the Rahus Institute (www.rahus.org), is producing a DVD documenting their experiences in the competition.

Solar Cal Poly is a multidisciplinary project headed by a faculty of both the College of Architecture and Environmental Design, and the College of Engineering. “This prototype for a solar-powered residence demonstrates the talent, creativity and the learn-by-doing philosophy of our students,” said CAED Dean R. Thomas Jones. “We are proud of the students and faculty team members who began two years ago on the quest to design and build a project that simultaneously saves energy, uses sustainable materials and solves California’s housing problems. They have taken this project far beyond the expectations of the Solar Decathlon competition.”

The Solar Decathlon is sponsored by the U.S. Department of Energy’s Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy in partnership with its National Renewable Energy Laboratory, the American Institute of Architects, the National Association of Homebuilders, BP, the DIY Network, and Sprint.

Financial contributions to the CalPoly team are welcome, and will offset transportation costs. Project details and a timelapse video of the construction are at the Solar Cal Poly website: http://solardecathlon.calpoly.edu. More Solar Decathlon information is available at the U.S. Dept. of Energy website: http://www.eere.energy.gov/solar_decathlon/.

Anti-gay movement gains momentum
Gays and lesbians in America are victimized in hate crimes twice as often as blacks, and numerous studies show these attacks are much more brutal than most assaults. is a non-profit organization recently formed in Loreto Baja California Sur Mexico to serve the needs of the indigent animal population of Loreto and its inhabitants. In the spring of 2003 Maria de la Lus Gonzales (Lucy) recruited Denise Jones DVM to help in a spay-neuter project. Since then, with the permission of the Mexican authorities, Denise and Lucy have been spaying and neutering animals on Lucyís kitchen counter. Since this times about 200 animals have been sterilized, the vast majority female. Natural Building in Santa Barbara
Solar Living Institute to Teach Natural Building in Santa Barbara

The Solar Living Institute (SLI) and Seven Generations Natural Builders will be offering a five-day cob building intensive at Orella Ranch on the Gaviota Coast near Santa Barbara for professional builders, homeowners and students interested in less expensive and ecological methods of construction. Students will make cob and learn how this building material, made up of clay, straw and sand, is implemented in natural building construction. The workshop, Cob Building Intensive (Sept. 26-30), will be led by Sasha Rabin, an alumnae of SLI’s internship program who apprenticed with the Cob Cottage Company and co-founded Seven Generations Natural Builders.

“With housing prices and construction costs soaring, more builders are implementing straw, clay and other natural materials into their designs,” says SLI founder John Schaeffer. “We are proud to have served as a haven for the natural building community since 1998.”

Included in the workshop is various cob wall building techniques, installation of windows into cob walls, methods for attachment of wood doors and roofs, and how to sculpt niches, shelves and furniture. Additionally, students will also be building a wood-fired cob oven.

The workshop costs $675. Registration for these and other Solar Living Institute workshops can be made by calling Cory Chu-Keenan (707) 744-2017 or visiting the Institute’s website at www.solarliving.org.

As part of an ongoing discussion at the SB local food production listserv sponsored by forthefuture.org folks:
<<there was a group that used a popular bulletin board and classified ad service to post two separate ads:
WHO HAS LAND and WANTS HELP MANAGING IT?
and
WHO WANTS TO MANAGE LAND, BUT HAS NONE?
Within a month, the group was overwhelmed with responses. There were more people with more land needing more help than people who wanted to work it!!! They now had orchards, ponds and countless back yards, all available for planting, improving and harvesting...>>

HOW COULD IT BE OTHERWISE?
In 1998 Jay Hanson the originator of the dieoff.org website wrote the following:
HOW COULD IT BE OTHERWISE?
What kind of future will our children have? Shortly after the year 2000, industrial activity will rise high enough for it to seriously degrade land fertility. This will occur because of contamination by heavy metals and persistent chemicals, climate change, salinization, topsoil loss, falling water tables, and increased levels of ultraviolet radiation from a diminished ozone layer.
Around the year 2005, global oil production will “peak”, and the spike in oil prices will quickly exacerbate other major problems facing industrial agriculture. <http://www.dieoff.com/page181.htm#52> [52] Food grains produced with modern, high-yield methods (including packaging and delivery) now contain between four and ten calories of fossil fuel for every calorie of solar energy. It has been estimated that about four percent of the nation’s energy budget is used to grow food, while about 10 to 13 percent is needed to put it on our plates. In other words, a staggering total of 17 percent of America’s energy budget is consumed by agriculture! <http://www.dieoff.com/page181.htm#53> [53]>>

PUEBLO
On Sunday July 24 PUEBLO celebrated its 5th year of organizing at La Casa de la Raza Santa Barbara , with honored guest and keynote speaker Dolores Huerta PUEBLO (People United for Economic Justice Building Leadership through Organizing) held its 5 year anniversary celebration at La Casa de la Raza. The event, as stated by the MC’s, celebrated 5 years of phone-banking, house-meeting, door-to-door canvassing, community forums, petition-signing, marches, protests, and the many more activities involved in grassroots organizing.

Modeled after strategies and tactics that built the United Farmworkers movement, PUEBLO has shared a close relationship with co-founder of the UFW Dolores Huerta and her foundation. In May 2003, PUEBLO staff were personally trained Huerta and Cruz Phillips on how to build community leadership, a significant factor that led toward the success of the UFW. In her address to the audience, Huerta stressed the need to build a movement from below, one in which community members are leaders and involved in determining their own future.

PUEBLO, originally founded as the Coalition for a Living Wage in July of 2000, is a multi-issue grassroots membership organization that has worked on issues such as affordable housing, public transportation, immigrant rights, health care, child care, tenants rights, and passing of a living wage ordinance for the City of Santa Barbara. The organization took Santa Barbara by storm when it brought elected officials, community leaders, and local residents together to work for a common cause: economic justice. As membership grew so did the number of local concerns the organization would come to tackle over the next few years.

PUEBLO has spearheaded several successful campaigns that are of concern to immigrants, low-income families, workers, environmentalists and local residents at-large. Some of these include “saving the Cleveland Child Care Center, winning a discounted 10-ride and unlimited 30-day bus passes, spearheading the local campaign that defeated Proposition 54, lobbying and gaining key local support for SB 60 which expands drivers license access to immigrants, and turning out working family voters for the City Council election, resulting in two PUEBLO members being elected to City Council (PUEBLO website 7/25/05).

Both PUEBLO’s strategies and record for getting the job done has made the organization a leading voice for economic justice and democratic representation in Santa Barbara. In just a few years PUEBLO has earned the respect of several local agencies and elected officials. During the celebration PUEBLO presented a preview screening of a new documentary “The Power of Organizing” directed by Osiris Castañeda. The highlight of the event was of course Dolores Huerta. Huerta spoke to the crowd about the rigors of organizing and the need to build from the bottom up. She shared a story about what led to the establishment of the UFW. She stated that Cesar Chavez approached and told her that “if we don’t start a national farmworkers union no one will,” and translated that back to the audience to let them know that if we don’t fight for justice in our communities no one will. Huerta was presented with a painting and banner made in her honor by a PUEBLO volunteer and children who attended the event, respectively.http://tinyurl.com/9eol6.

About The A-Infos Radio Project
http://radio4all.net.
The A-Infos Radio Project was formed in 1996 by grassroots broadcasters, free radio journalists and cyber-activists to provide ourselves with the means to share our radio programs via the Internet. To our knowledge, the A-Infos Radio Project was the first grassroots media project of it’s kind on the internet. Our goal is to support and expand the movement for democratic communications worldwide. We exist to be an alternative to the corporate and government media which do not serve struggles for liberty, justice and peace, nor enable the free expression of creativity. The archived material is available to anyone who wants it free of charge.

We welcome submissions from all stations and independent producers in the service of these goals. All material is donated by its producers who are solely responsible for its content.

We provide technical support via the Radio Project mailing list, radioproject@lists.riseup.net and are happy to help you with any questions or problems you may have.

SB 840 (Kuehl) Update Health Care For All Update
This year, thanks to your efforts, SB 840 successfully moved through three Senate Committees, passed the Senate floor, and most recently on July 5th also passed the Assembly Health Committee with a vote of 9-4. These are very important accomplishments. Additionally, we have seen a steady stream of positive media coverage about the bill and the need for a comprehensive healthcare reform as proposed in SB 840. Please see the attachments of two recent articles about SB 840.

We are well positioned to move the bill through the Assembly in 2006, and on to the Governor’s desk by fall of 2006. Additionally, plans are moving forward to introduce a separate finance bill early next year, which will be linked to SB 840, to fund the proposal. There will be more information on this to come as details emerge.

In the meantime, it is critical that advocates for universal health care continue to reach out in their communities to ensure that California voters understand and support the proposal. We need every person who supports this bill to help get the word out about this critical reform.

• Please continue sending letters to your Assemblymembers and State Senators. Use this link to find your representative: http://www.leginfo.ca.gov/yourleg.html.

• Organize in your community – bring SB 840 information to local political gatherings, social events, etc. You can download materials about the bill at www.healthcareforall.org.

• Contact your local chapter of Health Care For All (www.healthcareforall.org) to find out what activities are planned in your community.

Walking the Talk
Wilderness Youth Project Fall Programs Begin September 13 Santa Barbara CA

Young Eagles
This program is our gateway program to introduce youth to Nature is a way that allows mystery and the child’s own internal passions to speak through the activities we engage in. This program highlights our connection to nature, how we fit into ecology of our own unique landscape, and begins the learning of what it is to be a Peacemaker. We will engage in personal awareness and knowledge of place activities that will build youth’s confidence, self esteem, and naturalist knowledge. This will be done through well facilitated nature experiences that include curriculum based on our highly successful coyote mentoring.

Peace Makers Journey
Our second stage program builds upon the skills children learn in our Young Eagles program. The youth in this program will be taken much deeper into the primitive skills that we touch upon in the Young Eagles program. They will also be asked to demonstrate a level of understanding of what it means to be a Peacemaker. We will continue to deliver deeper coyote mentoring lessons and ask the youth for a higher degree of focus and dedication to the skills we are engaging in.

North Wind Leadership
This is our third stage program for youth who show a high degree of ability to focus and self motivate to continue learning about nature and our connection to ourselves and the natural world. They must have an integrated grasp of being a Peacemaker and show a distinctive level of public service. These youth will engage in long term projects that will test their skills and awareness constantly. This third stage program is open by invitation only. Please contact Charlie Coupal at 1-805-964-8096 to apply. For more information and to register, call 964-8096 ext 1. http://www.wyp.org
