| <back | home Introduction by Bob Banner Ive read the slogan "Another world is possible," but there seems to be something impotent about it. It assumes it hasnt been created yet or that it is simply in the imagination. HopeDances contention and mission has always been that there are models and experiments already out there. Rather than imagine another world, we are more interested in reporting on what is happening so we can bridge that gap between an imaginable realm and the world of "reality." Clark, Amy, Lynne and I set out to check out the incredible stories we heard about Portland. Part of this issue is a report on the activities we witnessed and tasted for ourselves. This issue takes the "Another world is possible" to another level by simply saying, "Because it has already begun." We dont have to keep digging for visions when people who have had the visions are implementing them in the real world, right now... as I type this. If you need inspiration, there are numerous activities that will offer you that inspiration. Again, this issue is full of them. From students at the Zaca Lake retreat to City Repairs wild village-building intersections and numerous other community-building activities. We celebrated our 50th issue last month with more than 100 people from Ventura, Santa Barbara and Santa Cruz, as well as our own county, to honor all the people involved with HopeDance. James Howard Kunstler has come out with a new book, and we reprint portions of a vitally clear and urgent speech he gave. For The Future is innovating positive actions to aid in the coming peak oil challenge. Please read about them here. We have summer films and events and a reading list that will knock your organic socks off. The "shorts" section keeps getting longer with more and more groups doing outstanding things that need media to report on them. Please support our work by letting people know about HopeDance and to financially support our work as well. Monica Vincent and I have completed a Survey to help us gauge what we need to do to keep HopeDance more and more relevant to building a sustainable society. Please either photocopy it or cut it out and fill it out [see the back of the front cover of the print version of this issue]. Thanks for reading HopeDance, and if you wish to stay connected, check out our listservs and the website. |
