<back | home A Mini Report of the Safe Food Film Festival by Bob Banner Nearly 75 people were in attendance for all three films plus the cartoon, The Meatrix. Since New Times did not mention the event at all, no one came from the NT, one person came from the Ticket, no one from KSBY, no one from KCBX, some from the flyers at the Palm and other places, one person from the website, and most came from seeing an email and/or reading about it in HopeDance. And 6-7 people came because of the freebie tickets we gave to over 70 people (media, farmers, ranchers, restaurateurs, food store owners). Organic pizzas were made by Reo and Cheryl. Even though there were complications with the oven they were using in SLO, the delicious organic pizzas (made from healthful ingredients donated by New Frontiers) moved very fast when they did arrive. Eric and his wife from Clark Valley Farm (Los Osos) brought a huge salad with his special arugula. Jenn and Ron Skinner brought carrots from their CSA at Huasna Valley Farms. Other snacks, tea, cookies and juice and mineral water were provided by HopeDance. During the few breaks throughout the evening, we had a number of people speak briefly about their projects/food actions: MaryAnn Vasconcellos (from CAFF; mavthyme@earthlink.net) told us about the effort to create the AgroTour Map which is now available (www.agadventures.org) Jenn and Ron Skinner talked about their CSA farm and how to sign up. (huasna4@tcsn.net) Eric Michaelson (ericm@clarkvalleyfarm.com) spoke about his farm in Los Osos (70 acres) and how he is starting a CSA for Los Osos and Morro Bay residents. Liana Forest (bearforest@earthlink.net) spoke about the From Farm to Schools project. Brooke West spoke about selling her eggs to people within walking distance to her home/garden in Los Osos. Judie Anders (judieanders@msn.com) talked about the EcoFarm Conference. Her report is in this issue of HopeDance. If people are interested in staying in touch, sign up. Some folks from Arroyo Grande told us how they halted (temporarily) irradiated food in the schools in AG. Tom Neuhaus spoke of his work in fair trade chocolate and his efforts to start a restaurant in SLO. He is a professor of food and cooking at Cal Poly. Hunter Francis (wfrancis@calpoly.edu) spoke about SARC at Cal Poly. Bestselling author of garden books Sharon Lovejoy ( http://www.sharonlovejoy.com ) who lives in SLO County six months of the year to garden, told us how fish farms are being halted in Maine due to excessive health problems. and others. The profit after expenses came to nearly $300. This doesnt include the free labor or volunteers like Nancy Ferraro, Carlo Christian, and Frank Vincent plus the numerous hours creating/designing/writing the flyers, contacting the media, creating and posting the PDFs, discovering the films (thanks to Liana Forest and Jack Biesek for telling us about the two latter films... and thanks to Bob Metz for informing me of The Meatrix cartoon online)... and thanks to THE MEATRIX folks who sent us their DVD free of charge and mucho literature. Bob Banner any questions feel free to call 544-9663. <back | top^ |
