Modern Day Miracle in Avila Bay

Gather ‘round the fire, I’ve got something to say; it happened in July, out in Avila Bay
They came without a warning, but with a warning too- They said, “We know what’s coming! What the bad folks want to do.”
They swam around the bulkheads, they swam along the Piers; they showed up in the numbers that they hadn’t done for years! They warned us of the coming storm, borne of greed and pain; they told us “Here we are, like we may never be again!”
I stretched my arm to reach one, and my finger touched his lip; I swear I wasn’t dreaming when he kissed my fingertip!
I knew his hairy bristle, not unlike my own; if he weren’t so darn big, I might’ve taken him home!
His eyes were pools of sepia jewels, his flippers, smoothe and flappy; I knew right off how wise he was, quite likely someones pappy!
He asked me if I’d fight for him, I answered “To the end!”
He dunked his snout and turned about, and swam off as my friend.

Take A-C-T-I-O-N now! Here’s how for locals:
*Call in to Dave Congalton's radio show at 6:00pm. It’s called: "Last Call" and the telephone number is (805) 543-8830. (Ask why the Tribune reported a lie on the headlines? The San Luis Obispo Board of Supervisors did not oppose seismic testing, they just want the tests to be done by the oil companies!)

*Also for locals on the Central Coast, attend the Los Osos Community Services District meeting tonight (Thursday, Nov. 1st). They have the seismic testing on their agenda. Their website is www.losososcsd.org. Their letter is weak and might as well have been written by the County. Please attend to help them get the message...OPPOSE THE PROJECT". See left column (5th link down) "Special Meeting".
Here’s how if you’re not local to our area but want to fight alongside us against seismic testing everywhere:

*Go down this checklist and make sure you've done all actions,

*INCLUDING CONTACTING PRESIDENT OBAMA:

Chair McFarlane and Honorable Commissioners,
Thank you for your efforts in examining the safety levels of Diablo Nuclear Plant and the subterranean geologic formations around it. Now that you have determined that the newly discovered Shoreline Fault poses no threat to the power plant, I respectfully urge you to cancel the seismic testing proposed for the Central Coast of California. There is not much to be gained by such tests, and our Marine Protected Areas, ocean based economy and marine life are all just too precious to lose.

Seismic Testing now threatens whales and marine life everywhere. The oil companies are blasting the oceans with impunity, and the effects are devastating. As the marine mammals wash up dead and dying, the regulatory agencies like our own San Luis Obispo Board of Supervisors are telling us that we are exaggerating about the deaths and carnage. Nothing like this has ever been allowed in California waters before. Porpoises are stranding in North Carolina and Florida, where seismic testing occurred nearby. 900 washed up near seismics in Peru. The evidence is compelling. No one has been able to stop them yet. But now they want to blast away in California, home of the world’s greatest activists and biggest lovers of the sea. The nuclear plant at Diablo Canyon will not be made safer by assaulting our whales with 69,000 air-canon blasts at 260db for 12 days, all day and night off the Central Coast.

We are the vanguard of the world with our new Marine Protected Areas. Now we have to be the vanguard of the world in protecting those protected areas from seismic testing that is unnecessary, destructive, and because of ‘Franciscan Rock’ formations, not expected to yield important results.

This is not about the safety of Diablo Canyon; if it were, the 64 million dollars the California Public Utilities Commission has granted to PG&E –out of our pockets- would be spent on plant upgrades. That is not the case. The money will be spent on killing the Whales of Avila. We must not allow that to happen. Contact the California Coastal Commission, get to the meeting in Santa Monica November 14th, tell your friends, and write to your newspapers!

With love and respect,

Joey Racano, STDCST
