2012 Entheogens Film Festival Testimonial Feb.13, 2012
How delightfully “mind-blowing” it was to have been a guest at the 2012 Entheogens Film Festival’s opening evening. Not only were the documentary film presentations fascinating and even ground-breaking, there was an electricity generated by the collective energy of those present, I.e., the filmmakers, consciousness pioneers, leading edge clinicians and researchers, and even erstwhile psychonauts like myself. What I witnessed was an evening so extraordinary that I reconfigured my already bulging schedule to attend almost the entire weekend.
Facilitator and author Ralph Metzner is a natural wellspring of information, a fount of experience and insight, and a beam of “clear light” illuminating a path forward for those of us given to consciousness expansion and/or “rapid-progress” psychotherapeutic approaches. The dozen or so eye-opening films presented here and the accompanying panel discussions shed much needed light on the entheogens’ vast potential for both these novel psychotherapeutics, and for personal and even societal transformation. Kudos too, to both Cathy Coleman for her sharp organizational and logistics skills and Jan Fischer for her welcoming behind-the-scenes presence and support; both their contributions allowed the proceedings to flow seamlessly.
IONS hosts a panoply of “frontier” consciousness events and concerts at its gemutlich retreat center located in the hills of Northern Marin County. The freshly prepared natural cuisine is not only luxurious and delicious, it’s healthy, too. IONS is a place where urban tensions simply melt away, streaming you into that eternal moment of now.

The weekend experience includes 12 + films and six seminars on the topic of entheogens, including cannabis, ayahuasca, ibogaine, LSD, MDMA, and DMT.
Participants will learn about: • The use of entheogens in indigenous shamanic societies for healing and connecting to the spirit world • Entheogen applications in the modern world for the treatment of addictions and amplification of psychotherapy; and • Entheogen potentials for consciousness-expanding insight and heightened creativity
The immersion experience begins with dinner Friday evening and ends with a closing reception Sunday afternoon. The seminars and discussions are being coordinated by Ralph Metzner, Ph.D., who has a B.A. in philosophy and psychology from Oxford University, a Ph.D. in clinical psychology from Harvard University, and has been involved in the study of transformations of consciousness ever since. As a graduate student, he worked with Timothy Leary and Richard Alpert (later Ram Dass) on the Harvard Psilocybin Projects. He co-wrote The Psychedelic Experience and was editor of The Psychedelic Review. Professor Emeritus and former Academic Dean at the California Institute of Integral Studies (CIIS) throughout the 1980s, Metzner taught courses there on “Altered States of Consciousness” and “Developing Ecological Consciousness.” His books include two edited collections on the science and the phenomenology of Ayahuasca and Teonanácatl, and Birth of a Psychedelic Culture, which he co-authored with Ram Dass and Gary Bravo.
Other discussants include filmmaker Rod Mann; CIIS psychology professor Frank Echenhofer, Ph.D.; Holos Institute Executive Director Jan Edl, Ph.D.; Martin Lee, and others to be confirmed.
