Individuals can resist injustice, but only a community can do justice.
-- Jim Corbett
SLO Code Pink is launching a new campaign to tell local officials we are holding them accountable to the taxpayers and voters. Following the message on the billboard/signs we put up on Hwy1 north of Cayucos saying “ WAR SUCKS from Healthcare, from Education, from the Earth, from Humanity,” we plan to speak to these issues that impact the everyday life of everyday people who live in our county. Every dollar spent on war today takes away from local services designed to benefit us. More than 171 billion dollars are earmarked for WAR this year, as we face disastrous cuts in state and local budgets. It’s way past time to bring our money home from foreign occupations and wars.
We are establishing a core group of Code Pinkers willing to show up at various governing bodies in the county, such as Board of Supervisors, city councils, planning commissions, health commission, school boards, etc., when any of these local funding issues are on the agenda.
HOW IT WORKS
You would receive emails stating which meetings and the time of public comment and a position paper. You can choose which to attend dressed in pink of course. (If you want to do this and need a T-shirt, please let us know.) It would be most efffective to have at least 3-4 or ideally more CodePinks at every meeting. IT WOULDN’T ALWAYS BE THE SAME PEOPLE.
One person would give the 2-3 minute position paper and tie it into war spending. We have a website that backs us up that narrows down war spending per community. Another advantage to this exposure is there is often TV/radio coverage of these meetings.
This would not be a huge commitment on your part. You could just attend any meeting that interests you. Our goal is to get enough people on the list, so that we will always be represented. Please, please reply to this message to get on the email list if you want to be a part of this exciting new campaign to WAKE UP SLO CO, ALL OF US PROCLAIMING IN UNISON “GIMME BACK MY MONEY!”
If we are successful, we will pass on our strategy to National Code Pink -- no other group has organized an action like this. Let’s be a model!
We plan to begin this campaign in early February. Anytime you would like to attend a meeting or for more info, please email Dian, ososousaville@charter.net . www.slocodepink.org .
