HopeDance will present a special area screening of LOCAL filmmaker

the San Luis Obispo Library, 995 Palm Street on Friday and again on
Saturday, May 30-31 at 7:30pm. Tickets at the door. Suggested

Obispo County Feed the Hungry program. There will be a post-screening
discussion with the filmmakers.
THE BALLAD OF DOROTHY DUNN is an agitprop music-drama set in 1930's
California during one of the most turbulent labor strikes in American
History. A Catholic activist (character inspired by the legendary
Dorothy Day) seeks to steer a humanitarian course through the clashing
rocks of right and left wing advocates that lead to violent vigilante
mob action .
The digital film is directed by Paul Gray, an independent auteur
filmmaker known for visualizing and dramatizing the inner lives and
states of mind of the characters he creates on the screen. Previous
films of his have been screened at the Grenoble, Trieste, San Franciso
and Berlin film festivals .
Atelier Pictures produced the digital feature film locally for a mere
fraction of the cost of a standard Hollywood production, the challenge
of the independent filmmaker. THE BALLAD OF DOROTHY DUNN exemplifies a
kind of “guerilla filmmaking,” adhering to the Maoist strategies of
existing outside the system by making use of “all the people and all
the terrain.” With the exception of the main role of Dorothy, as
played by Gretchen Gray, the film was cast entirely with local amateurs
and was shot in Guadalupe, Casmalia and Paso Robles, California. The
entire crew was assembled locally as well
Expressionistic multimedia story-telling techniques are employed
throughout the film, especially the fourteen ballad stanzas.
Accompanied by startling motion graphics, they weave through the movie
like so many Shakespearean soliloquies, offering commentary and insight
into the themes of the film. Many of the stanzas were performed by
local balladeer, Valerie Johnson.
